Learn How to Learn Online - Summer 2008 sessions
Are you new to “synchronous” (aka “live” or “real-time”) online learning? Or have you tried online learning and had a less than stellar experience? This online workshop is designed to introduce you to the features of the electronic classroom and to build your confidence in being a successful e-student.

First-time learners in the online environment can get overwhelmed by the technology. Unlike the physical classroom, you are the one responsible for setting up many of the components of your learning environment. If you're too distracted by the challenges of adapting to a new technology, it's going to be more difficult to learn.

In the supportive setting of the Learn How to Learn Online course, you will:
• Test our new Horizon Wimba platform
• Use interactive tools
• Improve your personal e-learning environment
• Practice real-time participation

Emergent Literacy Coaching @ Your Library
Easton Library, Meeting Room
September 15, 2008; 9:30am - 3:30pm
Easton, MD
This five hour workshop (CEUs = .5) will provide an overview of emergent literacy related to story time delivery in the morning, and an introduction to the concept of peer coaching as job-embedded professional development in the afternoon. Come learn about the newly developed Emergent Literacy Peer Coaching Wiki…and be prepared to enjoy the day!

This workshop is highly suggested for staff members that work with children who did not participate in the original training in 2001. It will focus on staff who work with children birth though age five. Staff who need/want a refresher are welcome, as well! Participants can choose to attend the morning or afternoon session, or both.

Morning Session Goals (9:30am-12:30pm):
1) To familiarize participants with the most current research on how to help young children start school ready to learn to read
2) To familiarize participants with the way readiness is assessed by kindergarten teachers
3) To demonstrate how public libraries can incorporate this information into their story times and provide support for No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and the Maryland Model for School Readiness (MMSR), including the Voluntary State Curriculum (VSC)
4) To introduce the new emergent literacy peer coaching wiki

Afternoon Session Goals (1:30-3:30pm):
1) To share the emergent literacy peer coaching pilot program, including the wiki.
2) To provide practice with coaching tools and techniques that support early literacy programming.

Lunch will be provided from 12:30-1:30pm. Email Jennifer Ranck (jennifer@esrl.org) if you have any special dietary or vegetarian requests and to register by September 2, 2008. Please indicate which session you want to attend (or both) and whether you can join us for lunch.
